How to Create a Hardware & Software Inventory for a Network

As the administrator of a network connecting various computers and other devices, it is a wise idea to create an inventory database to track your various pieces of hardware and software. The Filemaker Pro application, which is available for either PC or Mac systems, includes a template for network inventories that will help you start building your own database.

      Launch the Filemaker Pro application on your computer by using the "Start" menu on a PC or the Dock icon on a Mac.

      Select the "Create a new file using a template" option on the Filemaker Pro welcome screen.

      Choose "Business" and select "People & Assets" from the drop-down list of categories, and then highlight the "Inventory.fp7" template.

      Click "OK" to create a new inventory database, and then navigate to the area of your hard drive where you want to store the file and click "Save." A copy of the inventory template with no records in it will now open.

      Hit the "New" button at the top of the database window to create a new record in your inventory. You will be able to enter various information about the hardware or software you are inventorying, including the model, category and serial number.

      Use the "Delete" button at the top of the database window to erase any record from the inventory that you no longer want to keep.

      Search for records in your inventory by clicking on the "Find" button and entering your search criteria.
