How to Delete the Most Recently Used List in Adobe Reader

Adobe Acrobat Reader stores a list of your most recently viewed files. This makes it easy to return to documents you've opened by accessing the File menu of Acrobat Reader. You may, however, wish to keep your Acrobat Reader viewing private. This protection is extremely important if you are using a public computer. If you don't want other computer users viewing your recently accessed files in Acrobat, you can clear this list.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold down the "Windows" key and press "R." This will open the Run dialog box in Windows.

    • 2

In the Run dialog box, type "regedit" (without quotes) and press "Enter." This will open the Windows Registry Editor.

    • 3

In the Windows Registry Editor, navigate to the following registry key:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\AVGeneral\cRecentFiles

If your version of Acrobat is different, than select the correct version instead of 9.0.

    • 4

Delete all registry entries under the "cRecentFiles" registry key. These items comprise the list of your recently viewed files in Acrobat.

    • 5

Open Acrobat Reader. Click "File" at the top left of the window. Verify that the list of recently viewed files is no longer displayed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Editing the Windows Registry without care can cause serious problems to your operating system. Always back up the registry before editing it.
