How to Make a Portable Toilet

Sometimes you just have to go. And sometimes you don't have access to a toilet. Whether your are camping in the middle of the woods or camping at a music festival with thousands of people, a homemade toilet can help. There are only a few supplies needed for the assembly. Once it's ready, you can set your homemade portable toilet up in a corner of your tent, in a secluded area or in a small tent of its own.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the lid of a 10-gallon bucket, and remove anything inside the bucket.

    • 2

Line the bucket with two plastic bags just like you would line a trash can. Use any type of plastic bag, such as a garbage bag or a grocery bag, that stretches over the rim of the bucket.

    • 3

Place a padded toilet seat on top of the bucket. You can choose to use a hard seat or choose not to use a seat at all, depending on your preference.

    • 4

After doing your business, tie both bags into one knot so the contents of the bags are secure. Remove the bags from the bucket and dispose of them in an appropriate trash receptacle. If no trash receptacle is available, provide one for yourself. You can use another bucket and secure it with a tight lid. Or if you have biodegradable bags and are in an area where you can dig a hole, dispose of the waste by burying it.

    • 5

Replace the lining in your toilet for future use, much like replacing a trash bag when you take out the trash. Put the bucket's lid back on between uses. Just in case, write "toilet" with permanent marker on your homemade toilet. That way, there will be no confusion about what you are using your bucket for.
