Step 1
Train to become an electrician. If you haven't already gone through the training process of becoming an electrician, the first step is to find a training program that fits your needs. Most training programs last approximately four years. Training programs are broken into two major sections. Students spend their time between on-the-job training, working under the direct supervision of a licensed electrician. The other time is spent in the classroom, where aspiring electricians can learn policies, terminology, mathematics, how to read blue prints and other skills needed to become a successful electrician.

Contact the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors to begin your licensing process. To work as a licensed electrician in the state of North Carolina, candidates must contact the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors. The state board is the only association in the state of North Carolina that can officially license electricians.

Take the qualifying examination. To continue with the application process, aspiring electricians are required to pass a qualifying examination administered by the state board. The examination is a test to ensure that electricians know how to do everything that will be required of them. While actual electrician skills are tested, electrician terms, safety procedures and laws are also a major part of the examination.

Submit your completed application, with the appropriate fees, to the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors. Once you have passed the qualifying examination and submitted your money ($100 to $200 as of 2009) to the state of North Carolina, you may submit your completed application for your license. After the license is approved, it is valid for one year.
