Step 1

Act quickly. Obviously, this is not always possible, but the faster you get to the urine the easier the cleaning process will be.

Step 2

Soak up as much of the urine as you can. Using regular towels is best, but paper towels or rags will also work. Standing on the towels or rags may aid in soaking up the urine faster. Keep applying pressure until the towel or rag has soaked up as much moisture as it can contain. Repeat until area is as dry as possible.

Step 3

Find or make a good cleaning solution. Although you are dealing with urine from a child and not a pet, you will find that any pet product designed to clean urine will work equally as well on children's urine. It is best to find a cleaning product that will work on the enzymes in the urine. If you don't have any cleaning product like this available, you can also make a homemade version. A simple mixture of dish-washing liquid detergent and water should do the trick.

Step 4

Apply the cleaning solution directly to the affected area of the carpet. If you are using a commercial cleaning product, follow the directions on the package. If you are using a homemade cleaning product, apply the solution liberally to the affected area with a clean rag. Rinse the area with warm water, then blot the entire area with a clean towel.

Step 5

Apply a white vinegar solution to the area to remove any residue from the cleaning solution and to deodorize the area. A good solution is about an ounce of white vinegar with about a cup of warm water.

Step 6

Dry the area. Place another clean dry towel over the area and apply pressure until no more moisture comes up, or dry the spot with a fan, blow dryer or open window.
