Cleaning the inside of a computer sounds like a task best left to a professional technician. However, with the right tools and knowledge, it can be relatively easy and enjoyable, too. Keeping the inside of your tower clean is crucial to the efficient operation of the machine.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Can of compressed air
  • Mild cleaning solution (dish soap and water)
  • Small screwdrivers
  • Cleaning cloths
  • User manual
  • Vacuum
  1. Step 1

Turn off the computer and disconnect it from the power outlet. This eliminates the chance of electrical damage if any of the components get wet. It will also prevent accidental electrocution.

  2. Step 2

Disconnect all accessories from the computer, including the monitor, printer and webcam.

  3. Step 3

Remove the screws holding the tower cover in place. Put the screws in a safe place.

  4. Step 4

Wash the inside of the tower cover with warm, soapy water and a soft, lint-free cloth. Wipe the tower cover dry and set it aside.

  5. Step 5

Blow dust and lint from the circuit boards, fans and other components with a can of compressed air. Hold the can at least 6 inches away from the area you are cleaning to prevent damage to the components.

  6. Step 6

Attach a small nozzle to the vacuum hose and gently suction the loose dust, hair and lint from the compartment. Avoid pushing the nozzle into hard-to-reach areas; this might damage the components.

  7. Step 7

Dampen a cleaning cloth with soapy water and gently wipe the blades of the fans. Do not use too much water; it might drip into the components and cause severe damage.

  8. Step 8

Check all of the components to make sure you did not miss any dust or lint. Do not touch the circuit boards with your fingers; the oil from your skin can damage the circuits.

  9. Step 9

Replace the tower cover and screws. Do not overtighten the screws.

  10. Step 10

Reconnect the accessories to the computer and reconnect the computer to the electrical outlet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Read the cleaning and care section of your user manual before you begin your project. The manual will include specific instructions for your computer. Use a surge protector instead of plugging your computer and peripheral hardware directly into the wall outlet or extension cords. Surge protectors greatly reduce the chance of electrical damage.
  • Never use a feather duster or similar dusting tools to clean the inside of your computer. These products leave behind particles that can cause damage. Never use any cleaning product other than mild dish detergent to wash any part of your computer.
