How to Set Up an Ethernet Bridge

A bridge in computer parlance is a device that connects two separate networks. In most home or office installations, a bridge would be used to connect an ethernet network with a wireless one. Microsoft built the ability to set up ethernet bridges in its popular Windows operating system. With a few simple mouse clicks, you can set up an ethernet bridge to make your network work as a harmonious whole.

Things You'll Need:

• Wireless router
• Ethernet network
• Microsoft Vista

1. Ensure that the computer that you will be using for the bridge can see both networks. In most cases, this will be a desktop computer that is wired to an ethernet network and also has a wireless connection to a router.

2. Go to "Start -> Settings -> Control Panel."

   Double click on "Network and Sharing Center."

   Double click on "Network and Sharing Center" to open the network window.

   Click on the last menu choice on the left hand side entitled "Manage Network Connections."

5. Familiarize yourself with the network connections available. You should see one for your wireless connection and another for your local network connection.

   Select the two networks to bridge.

   Holding down the CTRL key, click on your wireless connection. Keep holding down the CTRL and then select your local network connection. They should both be highlighted. Release the control key and right click on one of the selected icons. A pop up menu should appear. Highlight the "Bridge Connections" selection.

7. Test between the wireless and local network to make sure the bridge is operating and connected.
