How to Treat Constipation in Infants

Constipation isn't just an adult problem. And if your baby hasn't had a bowel movement in a few days, he or she is likely suffering from constipation. Consider ways to relieve constipation in infants and promote regular stools.

Instructions

    • 1

Relieve constipation with water. Give your infant two to four ounces of water a day to help soften stools and get rid of constipation.

    • 2

Use apple or prune juice to get rid of infant constipation. To initiate a bowel movement, give your body apple, pear or prune juice.

    • 3

Massage lower belly. Softly massage your infants stomach to encourage intestinal activity.

    • 4

Cut back on cereal and solid foods. If constipation develops after switching to a new type of food such as cereal or jar food, reduce their intake to see if constipation improves.

    • 5

Ask your doctor about a stool softener for infants. If home remedies do not relieve infant constipation, ask your pediatrician to recommend a soft softener or laxative.
