Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, can become a chronic condition for people of any age. This condition ranges from unsightly to extremely painful. Fortunately, there are a variety of treatments and preventive measures that can be taken by anyone trying to cope with chronic eczema.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get an accurate diagnosis of your condition.

Many regular physicians miss the early warning signs of eczema and sufferers can go untreated for a period of time. A rash of the face, arms, or legs that is extremely itchy and sometimes painful, especially in reaction to stress, are all signs you may suffer from eczema.

If you suspect eczema, be sure to get a referral to a dermatologist – they are much better equipped with the latest research and knowledge of medications than most general practitioners.

  2. Step 2

Use moisturizers and other tools to prevent or minimize outbreaks.

Lotions are good, but creams are better. Be sure to get scent-free and dye-free hypoallergenic products.

  3. Step 3

Use cool water soaks, followed by moisturizing, from the moment an outbreak starts. Cool water soaks or wraps will offer considerable relief, just be sure to moisturize again within three minutes of discontinuing the soak or wrap.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your outbreaks are moderate to severe, ask your dermatologist to prescribe a steroid cream.
