Identifying fossilized and recent shark teeth can be an interesting hobby, but can be a difficult process. Even new shark teeth can undergo changes based on their location in the jaw, if they are found in the top or bottom jaw, age and gender of the shark. However, by using available resources and references you can identify any tooth you find with accuracy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Examine the color of the shark tooth. Typically, recent teeth are white or light in color and fossilized shark teeth are darker. Also, consider where the tooth was found. Teeth found inland are likely fossils, while those found on or near a beach could be recent or fossilized.

  2. Step 2

Examine the qualities of the tooth. Measure the length of the tooth, thickness, width, notice if it is curved, triangular, smooth or serrated.

  3. Step 3

Locate a book about shark tooth identification at the library or purchase one from a bookstore. Compare the characteristics identified in step 2 with the information and photographs.

  4. Step 4

Search the Internet using terms such as identify shark teeth, shark teeth identification, shark tooth collection or shark tooth characteristics. Click on the links in the Resource section below for additional information.

  5. Step 5

Talk to others who are experienced in collecting shark teeth. They can assist in the identification process and provide advice.
