How to Use Radio Frequency Gain on a Citizen Band Radio

The citizen band (CB) radio, which uses frequencies between shortwave and the 10-meter amateur bands, was established by law in 1949. The "RF Gain" control on a CB radio allows you to adjust the radio frequency to receive gain in weak and strong signal areas. High gain allows you to pull in distant stations with a trade-off in extra noise. Low gain can be used to reduce the noise when a station is nearby.

Instructions

    • 1

To increase the gain in order to hear a station, such as in a weak-signal situation, turn the RF Gain control knob clockwise.

    • 2

Monitor the transmission. If it is of acceptable quality, do not make any further adjustments.

    • 3

To reduce the gain, if the transmitting party is near you, turn the knob counterclockwise. If you reduce the gain, you will still hear the transmission but with less noise.

Tips & Warnings

  • Leave the RF Gain knob fully clockwise as a default position. You can always reduce the RF Gain when you need to.
