Give your bedroom a design makeover. Sewing a duvet cover for your bedding is a quick and inexpensive way to add a whole new look to your bedroom. Duvet covers are fabric covers that slip over your existing bedding and keep your bedroom decor fresh and up to date. Whether you wish to create a seasonal look or simply add color to your decorating scheme, make a duvet cover and add a splash of decorating inspiration to your bedroom.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    Creating the King-Size Duvet Cover

  1. Step 1

Measure the length and width of your bedding. Add 2 inches to the length and width measurement. These are the measurements you will need for your duvet cover.

  2. Step 2

Lay your flat sheets on your work surface. Measure out the length and width dimensions for your duvet cover. Start the measurements at the top finished edge of the flat sheets. Leave this finished edge intact. This will be the opening of your duvet cover. You will add ribbon ties to the finished edge, to tie the opening of your duvet cover closed. Cut off any extra fabric from the other three sides of the flat sheets.

  3. Step 3

Place one flat sheet on your work surface, right side up. Place the second flat sheet on top of the first flat sheet, right side down. Match together the finished top edges of the two flat sheets.

  4. Step 4

Pin together the two long sides and the bottom end of the duvet cover. Leave the top finished edge of the duvet cover unpinned.

  5. Step 5

Machine-stitch the three pinned sides of your duvet cover. Use a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

  6. Finishing the Opening of Your Duvet Cover

  7. Step 1

Place your duvet cover on your work surface. Measure out and cut five sets of ribbon (10 lengths total). Cut the ribbons long enough to be able to tie a bow.

  8. Step 2

Space the ribbon sets evenly along your duvet cover opening. Pin the end of one ribbon to one side of the duvet cover opening. Pin the end of the second ribbon to the other side of your duvet cover opening. Repeat this process until all 5 ribbon sets are pinned to your duvet cover. Make sure your ribbon sets line up with each other. After you slip your bedding into the duvet cover, you will tie the opening shut with the ribbon sets. Machine-stitch the ribbons to each side of your duvet cover opening.

  9. Step 3

Turn your duvet cover right side out. Check the ribbon sets to make sure they line up.

  10. Step 4

Slip your bedding into your duvet cover. Smooth the bedding flat inside the cover, and tie the ribbon sets together.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remove pins as you machine-stitch. Pins can break the sewing machine needle.
