How to Remove Parquet Flooring
-
1
Make sure the room is empty. Drape plastic sheeting over the outside of the door leading to the interior of the home to limit dust and vapors wafting from the construction area. Place a fan in a window to blow finer particles out of the room. Remove any baseboard, floor trim, door stops and vents. If necessary, secure the room as to keep all children and pets out of the work area.

2
Locate an area near the perimeter where you can slide a pry bar or the edge of a shovel underneath. Wedge your tool beneath the edge and pop or lift out a few pieces until you have a clear area of a couple square feet. If space is limited, you can also use a chisel or hammer to lift out the first few pieces.

Once you have a larger area cleared, using a shovel or scraper, keep lifting the tiles up a bit at a time while working toward the center of the room. Be careful not to damage the subflooring. Use caution, for the pieces may suddenly break or splinter under pressure. Remove the accumulating debris with a wheelbarrow or bucket and discard properly as you go to keep the work space clear and prevent accidents.

When all the tiles are removed, sweep the area. Take out any leftover nails or fasteners. Depending on the installation method, it may be necessary to get rid of any glue remaining on the subfloor. Do this by using a solvent or by scraping. If using a solvent, be sure to follow the application instructions closely and adhere to all safety precautions.
-
5
Rinse off any remaining removal solvent as recommended. If wet, allow the subfloor time to dry before continuing. Vacuum the floor. Be sure to clean all vents, closets, doors and window frames. Now you are ready to put in your new flooring.
