Write your own vehicle repossession letter.

If a borrower defaults on an auto loan, you may need to write a vehicle repossession letter and take custody of the car. This letter of notification could be required by laws in your area or the language of the loan document. Instead of paying a lawyer's expensive hourly rate, you can draft a repossession letter yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Include the recipient's name, address and loan number in the header of the letter. Address the recipient in the letter's salutation using the appropriate title. Reference the recipient's loan or account number again in the subject line of the letter.

    • 2

Explain why you must repossess the recipient's vehicle. List pertinent details such as the number of missed payments, total amount due and any clauses in the loan documents relating to repossession. If the recipient can still reinstate the loan by catching up on payments, list the exact requirements he must satisfy.

    • 3

End the letter with the closing of your choice. Leave four lines blank and type your name. Sign your name in the space between the closing and your typed name. If you are sending copies to any other party, such as a co-signor, include a "cc:" line with that party's name.

    • 4

List any applicable enclosures under the signature and "cc:" lines. You may want to send the recipient copies of any previously sent late notices or letters.

    • 5

Send the letter via Certified or Registered Mail so you receive a confirmation notice when the recipient receives the letter.
