This article is about interpreting the sixth card of the major arcana of the tarot, the number five, the Heirophant.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Your imagination
  • A notebook
  • Rider Waite Deck
  1. Step 1

    Pull the card out of the deck and look at it. Take a deep breath and meditate on the image. Use your imagination and think about who this person is and what he has to offer you. What do you see? Write the images that catch your eye in your notebook

  2. Step 2

    The Hierophant represents organized religion. Its the universal voice that prays together when people gather at church. The Hierphant is the religion you learn about. It is the church, temple, or mosque you worship at and the values it represents. There is earthy power there. It is your religious core in terms of society as a whole. Here that image is represented with a Pope.

  3. Step 3

    Look at the Hierophant's right hand. This position called also called mudra is a blessing of love and spiritual well-being. This hand offers a blessing.

  4. Step 4

    Look at the keys, it is spiritual knowledge, and wisdom. A gold & silver key crossed is a Roman Catholic emblem of authority and are the keys to the kingdom of heaven. He is earthy figure or translator between God and man.

  5. Step 5

    The staff is a the symbol of the Holy Trinity; the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost. The Hierophant's is responsible for the spiritual well-being of the people. Spiritual advice and leadership to the people is given by this person.

  6. Step 6

    This card is interpreted in two ways. First it represents a preacher, or man of the cloth who offeres spiritual advice. Look to the cards around it to see the message. Second this card represents the spirituality of the person you are reading. Let them know that if they are being called to go back to church, or have a desire to go, that God wants to communicate with them. The card is a message that lets you know that the querent has religious issues surrounding them at this point in time.

Tips & Warnings
  • The card also represents a wedding at the church if 3 of cups or any well meaning cup appears in the spread.
