Things You'll Need:

Step 1
When people move, it's an emotional experience. To compensate, we tend to hoard everything- even things that we don't need to keep. What most people don't realize is that they pay dearly for this luxury. If you don't need it- throw it out!
-
Step 2
Do as much packing as you can on your own. Moving companies charge a premium for this service. They also charge a premium for packing materials. Purchase your own moving supplies and packing materials and pack your things carefully in boxes; then label the boxes. This way, all the moving company has to do it load your things into the truck, and get it to your new home.
-
Step 3
Evaluate moving companies, and be sure to get a few different rates from different companies. Compare them to each other. Be sure to ask what the move includes, and whether or not there are additional charges. Some moving companies charge additional money for two story homes, packing material and long distance travel. These small charges can add up fast, so be careful.

Step 4
When deciding whether or not to get rid of your furniture, ask yourself if it would cost more to move it, or cost more to replace it. Things that are easily replaceable, but that take up a lot of space, such as a kitchen table and chair set, might be best being replaced instead of paying to move it. That is a notion that a moving company won't tell you, that can save you a lot of money.
