How to Fax From a Computer

In the past, computers required dial-up modems to send and receive faxes. This is no longer the case, as there are a variety of Internet fax services that only require you to have an Internet connection. Fax Zero allows you to send a maximum of two- to three-page faxes per day. With its easy-to-follow interface, you'll be sending faxes in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the document you wish to fax. Click on "File," then select "Save As." Choose to save the file either as a .doc or a .docx. Make sure that you save the file in an easy-to-find location, such as your Desktop or a commonly used work folder. Make a note of the file name and the folder in which you've saved it.

You may also choose to export the file as a PDF from the File menu.

    • 2

Next, open your browser and go to faxzero.com (see link in "Resources," below).

    • 3

Fill in the "Sender" data and the "Receiver" data. Fax Zero requires that you input your name and your email address and the name and fax number of the "Receiver."

    • 4

Now, click on "Browse" to select your document. Navigate to the folder where you've stored your document, then double-click on it.

If you need to send only a short fax, you may also simply type your message into the text box. Note that you cannot attach a file and submit text in the box for the same fax.

    • 5

      Enter the confirmation code.

    • 6

Click on "Send Free Fax Now" to send your fax. Note that it will show an ad on the cover page.

If you'd prefer a clean cover sheet, choose the "Send $1.99 Fax Now." Note that your paid fax may contain up to 15 pages and that Fax Zero accepts PayPal payment.

Tips & Warnings

  • Free Fax only allows you to send faxes. If you need to also receive faxes on your computer, you will need to use a pay service with an Internet interface or connect your modem to an analog phone line. If you have Microsoft Vista or XP, Microsoft's help pages can assist you in setting up your modem for sending and receiving faxes. For Mac OS X 10.x users, please see the Apple help section on sending faxes; match the correct article with your current version of OS X.
