How to Upgrade Win98

Most of the Windows computer software now being made is not compatible with the Windows 98 operating system and requires a newer operating system such as Windows ME, 2000, XP or Vista.       Ensure that your computer system meets the minimum system requirements for an upgrade, such as a 233MHz processor or higher, at least 2 gigabytes (GB) of free space on the hard drive, a CD-ROM drive, and 64 megabytes (MB) or more of random-access memory (RAM). Keep in mind that these requirements are for a Windows 98-to-XP upgrade. The requirements from Windows 98 to Windows Vista are higher.

      Back up all of the important data on your computer to an external hard drive. After connecting your external drive to the USB port of your computer, you should be able to copy files to the external drive. You can also use an online backup service.

      Close all programs that may be running on your computer.

      Insert the Windows upgrade installation CD into your CD-ROM drive. You will be prompted to enter the "Product Key" to install the new software. This key can be found on the back of the installation CD packaging.

      Read the license and agreement information. Select the option to "Agree" with the license protocol.

      Wait as the upgrade process begins to run. Enter information for any prompts the upgrade wizard gives you, such as the "Product Key" code prompt.

      Avoid interrupting the upgrade process. Doing so will force you to start over.

      Reboot your computer after your receive a prompt stating that the upgrade process has been completed. After rebooting your computer, you will be able to use your new operating system.
