How to Pack Dehydrated Food
Dehydrated foods are handy for camping and emergency situations, such as a prolonged power outage. Prepackaged dehydrated foods are typically sold in vacuum-packed bags containing pre-measured meals. Dehydrated food sold in bulk can be packed in a variety of ways, either for a short-term use such as camping or for long-term storage.
Things You'll Need
- Dehydrated food
- Resealable, boil-safe plastic bags
- Food weighing scale
- Boilable vacuum bags
- Food-quality vacuum sealer
- Indelible felt-tip pen
Instructions
-
-
1
Measure enough dehydrated food based on weight to serve a specific number of people. For example, if 10 ounces of dehydrated beef stew when added with water will serve four people, weigh 10 ounces of the mixture for packing.
-
2
Add the pre-measured food to individual, resealable bags if the meals are planned for a camping trip within a few weeks to a month.
-
-
3
Press the bags flat on a counter and press the air out of them, then seal. You can fold several bags of pre-measured, dehydrated food and place all of them in a gallon-sized resealable bag to create a self-contained dinner menu. Each bag can contain that day's meals at the campsite. Merely pull a bag from your pack and everything you need for dinner is in the bag.
-
4
Label the contents of the bags with a felt-tip pen. Dehydrated food is not always easy to identify in its dried state.
-
5
Place pre-measured quantities of dehydrated food in vacuum bags for long-term storage, using bags just large enough to hold the amount of food you need to store.
-
6
Insert the open end of the vacuum bag in the motorized vacuum sealer to extract all the air and close the package for storage.
-
7
Store dehydrated foods in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
