How to Wire a VHS Recorder to a TV

Before DVR, Tivos and other digital recorders were used to save content from a television, there was the VCR. A VCR was capable of both playing VHS tapes over the television and recording content from the television onto the player. Even though many locations no longer sell movies on VHS, it is still possible to purchase a VCR to use it as a recording device.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect a coaxial cable into the "Out" port of the cable or satellite receiver you have. Plug the other end of the cable into the "In" port of the VCR. If you do not have cable/satellite and are using an antenna, connect the antenna directly to the "In" port of the VCR.

    • 2

Take another coaxial cable and plug it into the "Out" port of the VCR. Plug the other end of the cable to the "In" port of the television.

    • 3

Power on the television and change the channel to either "2," "3" or "4." The channel depends on what the default setting for the VCR is.

    • 4

Change the channels for the television with the VCR remote.

    • 5

Insert a blank VHS tape into the VCR and when you want to record content press the "Play" and "Record" buttons at the same time. Press "Stop" when you want to stop recording.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you would rather use RCA cables (red, yellow and white cables) follow the same instructions, only connect them to the RCA "In" and "Out" ports.
