How to Build a Classifieds Web Site

Whether you are going to create a whole website dedicated to classified ads or just add a classified ad section to an existing site, the process is the same. You will either need to write a script or find one that you like that you can download. These can either be very expensive commercial scripts or scripts that are free for you to use.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the script that you wish to use. There are many sites available that have both free and commercial scripts available for download. Many of these sites also review the scripts or let their visitors review the scripts.

    • 2

Download and unzip your script. Many scripts that are available for download are in various compressed file formats. You will need to decompress your script before you can use it. There are several free utilities available for this.

    • 3

Set up your database. If the script requires a database, this must be set up in advance of running the script for the first time. If your web host has cPanel available for your use, you can create a database easily by entering the database wizard.

    • 4

Configure your script and upload it. Many scripts come with a configuration file that must be edited before the script will work properly. The items that must be configured vary from script to script, but generally speaking it is usually the path to the script on the server, the database information and the administrator login among other variables that must be set.

    • 5

Many of the available scripts have an installation script that must be run before you can use the script. If provided, run this script. It will provide database setup; you must give it information such as the database name and login.

    • 6

Enter the administration area of the script. This is where you will set up the categories for the classifieds. In this area you will also set up things such as how people can post classifieds and if you wish to charge for the service.
