How to Design Kids Closets
Designing a closet for your child should incorporate three major parts: functionality, organization and efficient use of available space. How you organize the inside of the closet will depend on your child's needs and how much room the closet has. You can purchase several different types of closet organization kits, however, they can be very costly. You can purchase your own materials and organizers and make the closet more personalized for your child and his needs. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the width and length of the entire closet. Then, measure 4 feet up from the floor and make a small mark on the wall with a pencil. Measure upward an additional 3 1/2 feet from that mark and make an additional pencil mark on the wall.
-
2
Adjust the large rod to fit horizontally in the closet. Screw in the brackets at the top pencil mark location in the closet. Fit the rod into place.

3
Adjust the medium rod to fit horizontally in the closet--going from one far end of the closet to the middle of the closet. Screw in the brackets to the bottom pencil mark location in the closet. Fit the rod into place.
-
4
Install the large shelf on top of the top clothes rod, approximately 1 1/2 inches above the rod itself. The shelf should be deep enough to hold some small items but still be accessible and reachable from inside the closet.
-
5
Hang the over-the-door shoe holder. The shoe holder will have hooks that slide over the door itself to keep it in place. This shoe holder will help save room inside the closet and keep shoes in an organized place.
-
6
Place the boxes or baskets on the floor of the closet. These boxes can be used to hold sweaters, sweatshirts, or can be used to hold various toys or games.
-
7
Hang your child's clothes inside the closet. The longer items, such as dresses or long pants can hang on the top rod, on the side where there is no bottom rod below it.
-
8
Place other large items you want out of the way on the top shelf of the closet. Be sure not to put anything too heavy up there in case your child tries to get it down herself, or if it falls off the shelf.

Tips & Warnings
You can use clothes rods and boxes, baskets and shoe racks in any color or design. Try to incorporate your child's favorite things when designing his closet to help make it a place he wants to take care of and keep in order.
