How to Hang Crepe Paper for Birthday Party Decorations

Turning a plain, everyday room into a place worthy of celebrating a birthday requires putting some thought and effort into the decorations. Crepe paper streamers are readily available and are also an inexpensive way to add pizazz to your décor. Use them on ceilings, across doorways and walls, and as embellishments to other decorating elements. Find crepe streamers in nearly any color you desire at party suppliers and discount stores. Crepe streamers are available with printed messages or designs that will match many birthday party themes.

Things You'll Need

• Crepe streamers
• Scissors
• Tape
• Balloons
• Gift bows

Instructions

1. Purchase rolls of crepe paper streamers in at least two colors that match the rest of your birthday party décor. Match one neutral-color streamer---black, white or gray---with one to two other colors.

2. Line up the ends of each color of streamer. Estimate the length necessary to reach from the corner of the room to the center, then cut the crepe paper streamers 15 feet longer.

3. Holding the two to three streamers together, tape them to the ceiling in the corner of the room so that a 5-foot length of streamers hangs down the wall.

4. Take the other end of the crepe paper streamers and stretch to the center of the room, where the light fixture is located if the room has one. Allow slack in the streamers so they drape gently between the corner and center.

5. Twist the streamers four or five times, then secure to the ceiling in the center of the room. Let the excess crepe paper--about 5 feet--hang down from the center. Trim it if it's too long.

6. Continue stretching lengths of crepe from each corner to the center until all four corners are completed. If you are decorating a larger room for the birthday party, stretch additional streamers from the middle of the walls to the center of the room. For smaller rooms, just do streamers stretching from the corners.

7. Disguise the areas where the crepe is taped to the walls by covering the tape with birthday balloons or gift bows.

Tips & Warnings

• Hang crepe paper streamers from the top of doorways so they dangle down like a beaded curtain. Tie crepe to the top posts of chairs or drape it around pictures and window frames.

• Have someone hold the ladder for you if you need one to reach the ceiling. Do not let crepe paper dangle directly over the birthday cake and candles, as this may cause a fire.
