How to Make Outdoor Halloween Decor

Create a spooky or fun outdoor theme for Halloween. Pick a theme for your lawn or compile several ideas into one. When choosing your theme decide whether you want it to be scary or fun. Have a clear pathway for trick-or-treaters or anyone else going to your house. Use luminaries to light up the path on Halloween. To further the Halloween look, put in a colored porch light bulb.   1. Ghosts

      Color a ghost face on an old white or off-white sheet.

      Put the sheet over a wire cage.

      Cut a long piece of wire with wire cutters. Poke a hole through the sheet with a piece of wire. Wrap the wire around the top of the cage. Wrap the other end of the wire around a tree branch.

    Tombstone

      Cut an arched tombstone shape out of thick cardboard.

      Paint it gray.

      Write a name and dates of death and birth with a marker. Think of something clever, such as Ima Goner, or something creepy, such as movie villains.

      Cut strip of cardboard and glue it to the back of the tombstone similar to a picture frame. Prop it up outside. Put rocks and dirt around the tombstone. Add fake bones to the dirt.

    Pumpkin Display

      Stack and arrange three hay bales together against a tree or in front of a scarecrow.

      Place pumpkins and gourds on and around the hay bales.

      Scatter leaves from the ground around the hay bales.

    Luminarias

      Tear up tissue paper into small strips.

      Mix one cup of glue with one-fourth cup of water.

      Dip the tissue paper in the glue. Apply the tissue paper to the outside of a glass jar. Use any size jar. Cover the jar.

      Put a thin layer of sand in the bottom of the jar. Place a tea or votive candle inside. Set the jars along a path. Light the candles.

    Porch

      Spread fake cobwebs over the porch railing. Leave the area in front of the door clear.

      Stick plastic spiders in the webs.

      Tie a large spider to a thick piece of webbing. Tape the webbing over the door so the spiders hangs low.

Tips & Warnings

  • To avoid decorations being stolen, only put expensive pieces out when you are home. Do not put fake cobwebs in trees. Animals get tangled inside of them.
