How to Be an Ambulance Driver

An ambulance driver is an essential part of every emergency response team. They are responsible for the safe transportation of paramedics and patients alike. Follow these steps to start a rewarding career as an ambulance driver.

1. Graduate from high school.

   To become an ambulance driver, you must have a high school diploma or GED. Secure this non-negotiable step before pursuing any of the others.

2. Complete an emergency vehicle driver course.

   ER vehicle operator or ambulance driver courses are most often found at community colleges. The ambulance driver training is relatively short and will prepare you for the test you must pass in order to become certified.

3. Get your EMT certificate.

   EMT certification is not mandatory but it makes you eligible to provide emergency care on scene as well as able to drive the emergency vehicle. Getting your EMT certificate along with your emergency response vehicle license will make you far more employable.

4. Keep a clean driving record.

   To become an ambulance driver you need a clean background and an excellent driving abstract. Make sure not to ruin your chances of becoming an ambulance driver by getting a criminal record or speeding tickets.

5. Get the proper endorsement on your driver's license by taking the ambulance driver certification exam.

   Usually held at your local DMV; sign up and take the ambulance driver endorsement test. Once you pass you will be a certified ambulance driver and you will be able to start looking for work.
