Bunk beds are the perfect solution for two children in one room. A bunk bed will take up less space and give your children more room in their bedroom to play. Here are the basics of what you will need to make your own bunk bed.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2x4 wood
  • bunk bed plans
  • table saw
  • band saw
  • wood glue
  • nail gun
  • nails
  • wood stain
  • ply wood
  • wood sealant
  • sander
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • chisels
  • tape measure
  • planks of wood
  1. Step 1

First you will want to measure the room that the bunk bed will be in. Make sure to get these measurements correct, so that there is no problem fitting the bunk bed after assembly. You will also want to measure the mattress that will be fitting inside the frame of the bunk bed to make sure that those fit as well. Measure the outside of the frame and leave less then 1/2" on either side for sheets and comforters.

  2. Step 2

Once you have the measurements, you will need 2 x 4 pieces of wood for the sides of each bed, the top and bottom of each bed, 4 pieces to attach the beds too. You will also need the ply wood to cut triangles to place in the corners of each bed, as well as thinner planks of wood to lay across from one side to the other of the bed frame to support the mattresses. There will also be the ladder that will need to be made, which can be made from 2 x 4s and planks of wood also.

  3. Step 3

You will want to follow the instructions for cutting the wood and nailing and gluing the pieces together. You will need to have access to a table saw, band saw, possibly a router, maybe a planer, a miter saw, an electric sander, and chisels.

  4. Step 4

You will need to make all your cuts and sand your pieces down and smooth all the rough edges. Using the chisels to get into corners and hard to reach places. Make sure all the pieces are smooth and free of splinters and sharp edges.

  5. Step 5

You will want to stain all the wood pieces and add the sealant to the wood before assembly. Give yourself enough time for all pieces to dry completely, before beginning to nail and glue the bunk bed together.

  6. Step 6

Once all the pieces have been cut, sanded, and stained, you can began the assembly. You will want to assemble the bottom bed first, then the frame that the beds will be on, then the top bunk. Do the top last, because it will be too heavy to lift onto the frame. At the very end, add your ladder the frame.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make all your cuts and measurements before assembling. This will make the assembly much easier.
  • Consider the space you have to get the bunk bed down the hall or up the stairs. You may want to do some assembly in the room that it will be going into.
  • Follow the safety instructions will all tools you are using and wear safety gloves and goggles as well.
