Sew on a zipper to repair on broken zipper of simply to change the color of the zipper that came with the material that you are working with.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Step One: Purchaser a zipper of the same color of the fabric that you are working on. Measure the length of the zipper so that you know what size zipper to purchase. Zippers can not be cut to size as there must be a stopping point for the zipper to close properly. If you try to adjust the zipper by cutting it at the ends, then you will not have a stopping point for the zipper. Measure the zipper accurately to fit the garment that you are working on. The garment can be altered to fit the zipper but the zipper can not be altered to fit the garment. Measurement of accuracy is of the most importance before beginning step two.

  2. Step 2

Step Two: The garment that you are working on should have a “v” shaped fold the size of the zipper. Insert the zipper inside of the “v” shape working from the inside of the material. Match the inside seam of the fold with the inside of the zipper that should be unzipped and measured to be the same length of the “v” shape that you are working on.

  3. Step 3

Step Three: Use straight pins to make sure that the zipper is in place so that once zipped, the garment will be neatly tailored. Use a sewing machine or a needle and thread to sew the zipper to the garment making sure that the zipper will work properly once the garment has been completely sewn. After the zipper has been sewn in the “v” shape of the garment. Sew a dash design at the bottom on the zipper to secure from the bottom. The top of the zipper should be sewn discreetly into the top of the “v” shape of the garment depending on the type of garment being tailored.
