Peepers the African Grey Parrot getting a treat from a dixie cup

Keeping our birds busy can be a costly endeavour. Using Dixie cups to make foraging toys for them is cheap and easy. Here's a quick way to make a good foraging toy using simple household items.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dixie cups
  • Clips (D-ring closed clips suggested)
  • something sharp to poke a hole with
  • treats
  1. Step 1

Poke a hole in the side of a Dixie cup towards the top, but not too close to the rim.

  2. Step 2

    Insert clip through hole

  3. Step 3

Place treat in cup. You can use almost anything that's mostly dry - nuts, dried fruits, pellets or pieces of some kinds of veggies. Pictured is a nutriberry.

  4. Step 4

Hang in an accessible place for your parrot. It can be anywhere - a playgym, or the parrot's cage, or anywhere you want your parrot to hang out.

  5. Step 5

You can crumple the cup around the treat to add to the challenge for your parrot. The parrot will have to chew up the cup to get to the treat inside, giving it a surprise when it succeeds.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose the clip you use carefully. Some clips are dangerous to parrot beaks and tongues
