People often use the words herbs and spices interchangeably, not realizing that they are two very different things. According to The Herb Companion, herbs are grown more worldwide and usually come from the leafy part of the plant. Spices, on the other hand, favor a more tropical climate and are usually obtained from the seeds, roots, fruit or bark of a plant. Both are often found in the kitchen and make great additions to just about any recipe or dish, especially when fresh.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose what type spices you would like to grow. There are many many types of spices; some of the most common include mustard, black pepper, cinnamon and ginger.

  2. Step 2

Educate yourself about the spices you intend to grow. What type soil should they be planted in? What climate do they best thrive in? How much sunlight and water do they need to grow?

  3. Step 3

Decide whether to grow your spices indoors or outdoors. If you are growing a small amount for personal use, you will probably want to grow them inside, possibly in a window box, so you can control the temperature. For larger amounts, you should consider growing them outside or in a greenhouse.

  4. Step 4

Obtain starter seed or spices; many can easily be obtained through local garden centers or nurseries. If they do not have the spice you are looking for, search online for a reputable spice dealer.

  5. Step 5

Realize that growing spices can take a lot of time and patience. During the first couple months you may experience a lot of trial and error (the soil may be too hard or too soft…the temperature may be too cold or too hot). Just keep at it and soon you will be enjoying your fresh homegrown spices.
