Step 1
Stock your refrigerator and freezer properly. Adequate air flow is required for a refrigerator and freezer to operate efficiently. Without adequate air flow, the refrigerator works harder to keep cool. Don't overstock your freezer and you will save money on energy costs. Turn the temperature setting to the lowest where you can still maintain the freshness and safety of food.
-
Step 2
Use a toaster oven or microwave instead of the oven. Delicious and hearty winter meals can be made in a crock pot. These appliances generally take less energy than using your oven.
-
Step 3
Open curtains and blinds and let the sun shine in. The sun provides natural energy and even in winter, your home will be a bit warmer and you'll save money by this simple method. Close curtains and blinds at night to provide more insulation from the cold.
-
Step 4
Check for drafts. Drafts around windows and doors can run up the cost of heating substantially. There are many products on the market to help with drafts, such as weatherstripping and shrinkable film for windows.
-
Step 5
Lower the thermostat on your heating system. Wear more clothing in layers. Layers will help to keep cold air off of the skin. You may feel a bit uncomfortable at first, but your body will acclimate to the colder temperatures while saving more money.
-
Step 6
Inspect and clean furnace filters often. Your furnace operates at a better efficiency and lower cost when the filter is clean. If the filter is dirty, the furnace will not have adequate air flow, which means it runs harder to do the same job and costs you more money.
