    Step 1) The first step in encouraging your friends who are unemployed because of the economic downturn is LISTENING. People need to vent because they are having tough times financially, and they are losing hope. Let them talk it out to you--all their problems, all their fears. Don't talk, don't judge; just listen to them.

    Step 2) The second step in encouraging your friends who are unemployed is OFFERING A SOLUTION. After your friends detail his or her problems to you, give them a prognosis, and work toward a solution with them. Help them make a plan so that they can get a job and back on their feet. Call your contacts for them.

    Step 3) The third step in encouraging your friends who are unemployed is being ACCESSIBLE TO THEM. Let them lean on you for referrals to business contacts, a restaurant dinner bill, and at 1:00 in the morning when they are destraught. Once your friend gets back on his or her feet, you will have a friend for life whom you can count on as well.
