There's no need to throw out that wilted lettuce. Revive it! Yes, you can easily turn soft, wilted lettuce into crisper lettuce suitable for great salads and sandwiches. You'll be proud of yourself for saving your lettuce from the compost heap and save some money in the process.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • wilted lettuce
  • 2 - large bowls
  • ice
  • colander
  • kitchen towel
  • paper towels
  1. Step 1

Fill a large bowl with cold water and several ice cubes (the more ice, the better). Stir in 1 Tbs of salt or sugar per quart of ice water. Set aside.

  2. Step 2

Fill a second large bowl with very hot tap water and submerge your lettuce for about 5-10 seconds.

  3. Step 3

Immediately upon removing the wilted lettuce from the hot water plunge it into the ice water and gently move it around with your hands. Do this for about 15-20 seconds.

  4. Step 4

Remove your lettuce from the ice water and place on top of paper towels. Press another layer of paper towels on top to help squeeze any water off your lettuce.

  5. Step 5

If you have a salad spinner, use it. If not, a large kitchen colander will work. Put your lettuce in the colander, place a clean kitchen towel on top and shake it up and down to remove water.

  6. Step 6

Refrigerate your lettuce for an hour or two and PRESTO! Your wilted lettuce should be wilted no more.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always tear lettuce, do not cut. Cutting causes the edges to turn brown quicker.
