Cook Ready to Eat Corn on the Cob in the Microwave

Corn on the cob is so good fresh from the farmers market and steaming hot on your plate. Boiling in water simply takes away much of the nutritional value but steaming keeps the corn flavorful and nutritious. Using the microwave and steam with butter makes the cooking easy and the corn healthy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clean the corn completely removing all the husk and silk strains. Cut off the two ends so you have a place to put corn holders. Rinse thoroughly. Steaming after cleaning is easier and safer than trying to remove husks or silk when the corn is steamy hot.

  2. Step 2

Lay out a piece of plastic wrap twice the length of the corn on the kitchen counter. Butter the corn. Yes, put your favorite butter/margarine spread on the corn.

  3. Step 3

Place the corn at the upper center of the plastic wrap and fold down the upper part of the plastic wrap to cover the corn. Fold over the sides toward the center to make an 'envelope' for the corn. Just before sealing, place a tablespoon of water in with the corn. Seal and place fold side down on a microwaveable plate. Plates are used for possible leakage and to help in handling hot corn.

  4. Step 4

Cook in a microwave oven. Two ears of corn will take about 6 minutes on high. Time depends on wattage of microwave.

  5. Step 5

Take out the plates of corn and place on the counter. With hot pads still on hands, slit open the plastic wrap envelopes with either a knife or kitchen scissors and pull apart and away from the corn. Place corn holders on each end. Pick up the corn by the holders and place on your dinner plate.

  6. Step 6

The corn is now 'ready to eat.' You don't need to add butter because it was steamed in the butter/water sauce and captured the butter flavor at that time.

Tips & Warnings
  • Warning: In the past plastic wraps contained BPA (Bisphenol A) which could cause cancer. Check your package label before using in the microwave to ensure it does not contain BPA

on 10/2/2009 What a novel and interesting idea. I am going to buy some corn tomorrow, and give it a try. I do enjoy corn, but find it too troublesome to cook it in the conventional way. You make it so easy. Thank you. 5*. I have subscribed to your articles, so will be advised once you publish new ones. I will also be reading more of your articles in the days to come.
