How to Install a U-Haul Trailer Hitch
Whether you are moving across the country or across town, U-Haul is one of the more common moving equipment companies around today. Unless your vehicle came with a trailer hitch pre-installed, you will have to install it to use any of U-Haul's equipment. Along with their line of trailers, U-Haul also offers hitches for every vehicle on the road. While having a U-Haul trailer hitch professionally installed can be expensive, the job is relatively simple to do yourself with the proper tools.

1
Understand which trailer hitch you need for your vehicle. U-Haul has different trailer hitch classes which are designed to handle different max load weights. Check the graph on U-Haul's site to determine which hitch you need (see Resources).
-
2
Jack up your vehicle to provide clearance during installation. Use jack stands for additional support and give yourself enough room to move comfortably underneath the vehicle.
-
-
3
Pre-assemble the hitch per the instructions from U-Haul. Every style of hitch will be different. Once assembled, hold the hitch up under the vehicle to ensure it will fit properly, and make marks for any holes that need drilled.
-
4
Drill any holes that are needed for installation. Make sure that the holes are no more than 1/16 inch larger than the bolts you are using to attach the hitch.
-
5
Use C-clamps to hold the hitch in place. Position the hitch over the holes on the frame and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer specifications in the U-Haul hitch manual.
-
6
Attach the electrical connector to the brake lights and turn signals. The connector will vary depending on your vehicle, so read the manufacturer's instructions first.

Tips & Warnings
Drill only the holes you need. Excess holes will weaken your frame. Make sure your U-Haul hitch is flush with the frame during installation. Use the proper tools and wear safety equipment when drilling holes. Have a spotter nearby to hand tools and watch for danger.
Do not weld the hitch to the frame as this will weaken the frame and hitch. Do not modify a U-Haul hitch. If the hitch does not fit, return it for the proper model. Avoid drilling into existing vehicle components.
