How to Make Enemas
Enemas may be used to relieve constipation, cleanse the rectum before medical examinations, and for cleansing the rectum prior to engaging in intimate interpersonal activity involving the anus and rectum. The apparatus and solution you use to administer the enema will vary upon preference, purpose and quantity.

Attach the enema tubing to the enema bag. Ensure that the clamp is in place on the enema tubing before filling the bag with the enema solution.

Remove the nozzle and cap from the disposable enema bottle. Fill the disposable enema bottle with the desired enema solution. Replace the cap on the disposable bottle before inserting the tip into the rectum to administer the enema.

Remove the rectal applicator tip from the enema bulb. Fill the bulb with the desired enema solution. Reassemble the rectal applicator tip.
Creating the Enema Solution

Fill a large bowl with water. You may want to heat the water on the stove or in the microwave oven to 103 degrees F. Heating the water helps to dissolve the additives of the enema solution.

Instill the desired additive to the enema solution. If you are using Epsom salt in the enema, use 2 teaspoons of Epsom salt for each quart of water. Use a half cup of coffee for each quart of water. Use three drops of gentle hand soap for each quart of water. Mix the ingredients thoroughly into the water. You may add the water and solution directly to an enema bag instead of mixing in a bowl then transferring to a bag.

Pour the enema solution into the enema device using the steps mentioned in Section 1. Lubricate the enema applicator tip with a water-soluble lubricant before inserting the tip into the rectum to deliver the enema.

Insert the enema tip into the rectum. Release the clamp, or squeeze the disposable enema bottle or bulb to deliver the medication into the rectum.

Retain the enema solution for a minimum of five minutes. The longer you can retain the enema solution the more thoroughly it will cleanse the colon and rectum.
