Standard camper roof vent

Recreational vehicles and campers use a standardized 14-inch vent covering for allowing air circulation through the roof, held in place with several hex-head screws. The main vent cover uses an aluminum crank regulator to push the plastic into place. Any of the parts can wear out and fail, requiring replacement. You can replace a camper's roof vent cover at home in about 30 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the screen frame by unscrewing its two or four screws, then firmly pulling on the frame edge until it releases. On some models, remove the center crank in order to take out the screen frame.

    • 2

Remove the bolt that holds the plastic cover to the support arm by turning its nut counterclockwise.

    • 3

From the topside of the roof, turn the smaller screws that hold the back of the vent cover to the support arm counterclockwise. The vent is now free.

    • 4

Replace the vent cover with a new one and secure it to the support arm with the two smaller screws, turned clockwise.

    • 5

Inside the camper, reconnect the pivot screw to the support arm by turning it clockwise, making sure it is in the proper position.

    • 6

Restore the screen and secure it by turning its screws clockwise, or simply pressing it into place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Placing a gasket on the underside of the cover will reduce leaks.

  • Use proper precautions when climbing onto a camper.
