Basset hounds are loyal dogs and make good family pets, even for households that do not have large yards such as apartments or condos. The basset hound is fairly easy to train, does not need too much exercise, and has a unique look. When caring for a basset hound, there are several things to watch out for, but overall, basset hounds are generally healthy and easy to care for. Even so, be sure to visit your vet regularly to keep your basset hound in prime condition and top health.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ear care is very important in basset hounds due to their long ears. If your basset hound scratches his ears a lot, check with your vet: Your pup may have an ear infection.

  2. Step 2

Another important aspect of basset hound care is teeth and gums. Brush your basset hound's teeth daily with a special toothpaste for dogs to avoid major dental problems such as periodontal disease.

  3. Step 3

Feed your basset hound a well-balanced diet consisting of water and a dog food of high quality such as Blue Buffalo. Check your local pet-supply store for high-quality dog foods which will provide your basset hound with the nutrition he needs for optimal health.

  4. Step 4

Grooming is important to the health of your basset hound. Bathe him regularly and keep his coat brushed and his nails trimmed.

  5. Step 5

Like all dogs, basset hounds need a monthly heartworm pill and medication to prevent ticks and fleas. Taking these preventative steps will keep your basset hound healthy and help to avoid large vet fees in the future.
