How to Install a Body Kit

A body kit consists of a stylish front bumper cover, rear bumper cover and side skirts to replace the plain factory parts. The kits are aftermarket accessories and are made for just about every make and model of car available. Body kits generally come in either fiberglass or urethane material. Fiberglass is less expensive than urethane, but it also cracks and chips much easier than urethane. Both kits are installed using the same steps and materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the car or the areas where the body kit materials will be applied. Dirt and other debris can prevent the body kit from proper alignment and/or not allow the tape to adhere to the car.

    • 2

Place the front bumper cover up to the area where the kit will be installed. If the bumper doesn't fit right, use a grinder or drill to make small adjustments so that the bumper will fit in the correct place. Drill holes into the new bumper cover so that it is installed in the same holes the old bumper used.

    • 3

Wipe the areas, where the side skirts of the body kit will go, with grease remover and a microfiber towel. Next, apply a small amount of adhesion promoter to these areas. Allow it to dry for a few minutes.

    • 4

Place the double-sided tape along the edges of the side skirts so that when mounted, the tape will come into full contact with the body of the car. Place the side skirts directly under the edge of the car, remove the protective paper and press the skirts into place. Drill holes and secure the skirts with screws, at least two in the front and two in the back of the side skirts.

    • 5

Place the rear bumper where it will be installed. Hold it up to make sure all holes align correctly. If they don't, grind away excess material so that the holes align. If they still don't align, drill new holes. Secure the rear bumper cover with enough screws to fill the holes used by the previous bumper. A bumper cover can be held in place with very few screws, but will eventually tear from the strain of using only a few screws.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your body kit will be painted, have it painted before installation. This allows for the best paint coverage and less opportunity for cracks or peeling paint.
