How to Separate Work From Home
An individual's work life and home life is often equally essential to his well being. It can be difficult to separate them because at times one may threaten to overtake the other in terms of importance; therefore, balance is needed. To achieve this balance between work and home, follow these steps.

Separating Work from Home
-
1
Make a separate to-do list for work and home. Before leaving the office, write down your work plans for the next day and clear your desk of any clutter; clutter causes confusion, which is not a healthy or productive way to start a workday. Prepare your home to-do list at the start of every week, outlining what you want to accomplish for yourself and/or family each day. For example, one day may include family movie night, another may include card game night, while another day may include preparing a special dinner together. Prepare a to-do list for the week even if you live alone. Try taking a long, relaxing bubble bath one evening, another evening enjoy some quiet time by reading or listening to soothing music, and on another night socialize with friends.

Make a conscious decision to leave all your issues relating to work at work and deal with those relating to home at home. If you work outside the home and have to work alongside others, you may encounter many "bad days." The only way not to take your work grievances home is to decide to leave them at the office. On your way home from work, if you are feeling uptight or tense, take deep breaths to instill relaxation into your mind. Focus your attention on your home by thinking about what you will do when you get home.
If you work at home, formulate a schedule, e.g. noon to 8 p.m. or 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., whichever works best for you and your family. Wear clothing that makes you want to work; refrain from wearing your nightgown or pajamas while working.

Take care of yourself, physically and emotionally, by getting enough rest and maintaining a healthy diet. If you are getting enough sleep, you will awake for work invigorated every day and you will have the necessary energy to devote to your job and to your home life. If you have children and they are old enough, have them help out around the house and run errands; this allows you more time for yourself and for your family, and reduces your stress level when it's time to work.
