Step 1
Consider choosing a color that has been used near the door. If you are painting an exterior door of your home, you may want to consider painting the door the same color as your home or as the shutters, trim or deck. If the door you will be painting is an interior door, then the color that is on the walls or in the wallpaper will work nicely. Remember, every door has two sides. An exterior door can be painted the color of the trim on the outside, and the color of your entry room on the other just as an interior door can be painted to match both the room inside and the hall or room on the outside of the door.

Step 2
Consider what colors you would like to add to your home's color theme. Adding in a new color to your interior or exterior decor will enhance the look of your home. Think about what colors will blend well with the colors in your color scheme and choose one that works. A good choice is to use an existing color on the main parts of the door, and then bring in a new color as an accent for trim, smaller areas of the door and the door frame.

Step 3
Lay down a paint tarp in front of the door, on the floor. This will protect your carpet, wood or vinyl flooring from paint splatters. Apply the painter's tape all around the edges of the door frame. This will protect the wall from paint slips. If you plan on painting sections of the door with a second color, tape these sections off as well. Same goes for the trim.

Step 4
Get ready to paint using a paintbrush and the first color you will be using. This is the color that will cover most of the door surface. It is best to paint the large areas first and then to do the trim and such. If you will be using a color to paint with that is lighter than the existing color on the door, you may want to coat the area with a paint primer first to ensure that the existing color will not show through.

Step 5
Make sure that your main color is completely dry. Remove the painter's tape that protected sections to be painted with the secondary color, but leave the tape that protects the wall in place. Use a paintbrush to apply two coats of the secondary color. Use the secondary color on the door frame too, as a freshly painted door does deserve a freshly painted door frame.
