How to Operate a PSP Portable

The Sony PSP has seen several different versions since its release back in 2005. Still, each model generally operates in the same way, making it an easy-to-operate multimedia gaming console for someone on the go.

Instructions

Connect the power input into the PSP and plug it into the wall. A small orange light will illuminate on the console to show that it is charging. This step isn't always necessary, but it is recommended when the battery is low or when you are operating the console for the very first time.

    • 2

Slide the on switch found on the side of the console up and release it. The console will power on and take you to the Home screen, also referred to as the XMB (cross media bar).

    • 3

Open the UMD (universal media disc) compartment on the back of the console to insert a game or UMD movie. On the PSP-1000, you will have to flip a switch on the top of the console to open the tray. On later models, you pull it open with your finger. Close the compartment when the disc is in.

Use the directional pad to navigate through the menus and select the options you want by pressing the X button. You can use Circle to cancel and back out of menus. If the UMD you inserted doesn't load right away, you can find it under the Game menu on the XMB.

    • 5

Power off the console by pushing the on switch up and holding it until the console powers down completely.

Tips & Warnings

  • Put the console into sleep mode by pushing the on switch up and quickly releasing it. This is great for someone who is in the middle of a stage and wants to keep their current progress without saving. Insert a memory stick into the memory stick compartment of the console to save your progress and store downloaded games and content right on your PSP.

  • Don't open the UMD tray while you are playing a UMD. The only time it is safe to open the tray is when the console is off or when you're on the XMB. Be wary of your console's charge, especially during downloads and system updates. If the battery dies during play or an update, you could lose your progress or corrupt your system.
