How to Swag Tulle & Lights on a Wall

Tulle and strings of small lights add a romantic atmosphere to almost any setting. Tulle is an inexpensive lacy fabric that is easy to work with. Both tulle and lights are available in many different colors. Drape the lightweight tulle throughout the room or on posts outside as decorations for your next big event.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure around the facility you are using to find out how much tulle fabric you need. Double the measurement to allow for the swags to drape.

  2. Step 2

Purchase the required amount of tulle. Use a sewing machine with matching thread to sew lengths of tulle together if necessary.

  3. Step 3

Install hooks for hanging the draped tulle on the walls of the facility, if necessary. Use whatever is available first, such as sconces or already installed hooks. Make sure all the hooks are evenly spaced.

  4. Step 4

Start at one end of the room and drape the tulle over one of the hooks. Tie a knot in the tulle to secure the end to the hook.

  5. Step 5

Go to the next hook and lay the tulle over the hook. Pull down the tulle in between the two hooks about a third of the way down the wall. Experiment a little to see how much of a swag you like. Be careful not to pull the swag down too far or it looks like it will look like it is falling. Be careful to pull it down far enough so that the swag does not look too tight.

  6. Step 6

Keep making swags all around the room. Tie a knot in the tulle to secure it to the last hook.

  7. Step 7

Add the strings of lights to the tulle. Start at the beginning knot of tulle. Wrap the lights around the knot to secure them to the tulle. Following the drape of the swags, hang the lights in a similar manner. Bury the lights in the tulle a little bit to make the glow of the lights softer. Hang the lights all around the room the same as the tulle. Use end-to-end lights so you will not need extension cords. Use one extension cord to plug in the lights.

Tips & Warnings
  • Attach the tulle swags to pews in churches to reserve seats for special guests. Tulle and light swags do not only have to be on the walls. Drape them from chandeliers on the ceiling to the walls.
