How to Make Contact Lenses

Not everyone loves to wear contact lenses, especially new users, who may find the circular objects quite foreign to their eyeballs. However, they are a good alternative to eyeglasses. Those who play sports find them very convenient. In making contact lenses, the most important aspect to consider is the vision levels that need to be corrected. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Preparation Process

    • 1

Collect the plastic material necessary to make your own contact lenses. Plastic tends to be the material of choice, although you can use much softer material. Make up your mind if the lenses will be to correct vision or to change a person's eye color.

    • 2

Mold the plastic (also called polymer) into the shape of the contact lens, which is usually round. Melt the plastic. Use the specific lens-contouring machine to mold the lens by pouring the melted plastic into it. Apply extreme pressure to shape the lens into the exact shape of the human eyeballs.

    • 3

Wait for the molded contact lens to cool and then apply it to a new machine that will grind the contact lens to level the edges. Take your time with this process to make sure that the lens is smoothed properly.

    • 4

If you don't have a molding or grinding machine, use a laser to cut the contact lens from plastic material. Make sure that the laser cuts the plastic in a circular shape to fit the eyeball. The edges will be rough and will need to be polished. Use a polisher to smooth the hard edges of the contact lens.

    • 5

If you don't have a laser, use a lathe to make the contact lenses by cutting the material in the form of the human eye. This method is not the most modern, but is just as effective as using an extreme pressure mold and laser equipment.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember that the contact lens will be used on the eyeball and that because of the eye's sensitivity the contact lens must be safe for use. Put contact lenses in sterilization solution before packaging them.

  • Contact lenses have to be worn appropriately, especially if the wearer has sensitive eyes. If they are not made properly they can damage the eyes. Make sure you put a warning on the packaging that single-use contact lenses should not be worn overnight. Also warn users that they should wash their hands before they put in or take out their contact lenses.
