If you have decided to make a dalmatian costume for your baby, rather than buying a store-bought one, you have made a wise decision. Home made costumes are not only far less expensive, they also lend themselves to more memories. You will have fun creating the dalmatian costume, and your child will enjoy looking at photos when they're older, knowing you took the time to make a one of a kind costume for them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • White long-sleeved one-piece pajamas
  • Black paint
  • Red paint
  • Yellow felt
  • White jersey knit fabric (tshirt material)
  • Hot glue and glue gun or "Tacky glue"
  • Wax paper
  • a few cotton balls
  1. Step 1

Wash the one-piece pajamas and white jersey fabric in the washing machine. This will remove any "sizing" from the fabrics, to ensure that your paint will adhere better. Dry the outfit and fabric.

  2. Step 2

Slide pieces of wax paper inside the outfit, to separate the front and back. This will prevent the paint from bleeding through from one side to the other. This outfit will be the main part of the homemade dalmatian costume, and you want it to look as neat as possible.

  3. Step 3

Lay out the white jersey knit fabric on a piece of wax paper.

  4. Step 4

Paint black splotches on the outfit. If you are using fabric paints made specifically for painting tshirts, you can simply use the pointy end of the bottle to create the spots for your dalmatian costume. If you are using paint without an applicator tip, use a small paint brush to paint the dalmatian spots.

  5. Step 5

On the loose white jersey knit fabric, paint smaller black splotches. This will be cut and formed to make a tail for the baby dalmatian costume, so make sure the spots are smaller than those that you painted on the outfit.

  6. Step 6

Use scissors to cut a strip of cloth about twelve inches long and three inches wide (you can adjust this depending on the size of your child). Fold this strip of cloth on itself, to form a tube. Glue the long side together. Close one end of the tube and glue in place (this is the tip of the tail, so adjust it to look like the end of a tail for your dalmatian costume.

  7. Step 7

After the glue has dried, pull apart some cotton balls and carefully stuff the tail, to give it some dimension.

  8. Step 8

Glue the tail to the seat of the one-piece outfit. Your baby's dalmatian costume is ALMOST complete.

  9. Step 9

Paint a ring of red paint around the neckline of the outfit. This will be the "collar" for your little dalmatian.

  10. Step 10

Cut out a circle of yellow felt about the size of a quarter.

  11. Step 11

Use glue to adhere the yellow felt "dog tag" to your baby's dalmatian costume. If desired, use a fine-point permanent marker to write a name on the "dog tag."
