Having a yard sale is a great way to free up storage space and get a little extra cash doing it. Preparation is key to a successful yard sale.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Time
  • Price stickers
  • Signs
  • A way to advertise your yard sale
  1. Step 1

The first step of having a yard sale is deciding when you are going to have it and whether you are going to have it yourself or invite friends or family to join.

  2. Step 2

The next step is finding items that you want to sell. The garage, the attic, really where ever you are running out of storage space is a good place to check.

  3. Step 3

Depending on how much you want to earn price the items either to move, or price them a bit higher to allow customers room to haggle on the price. You should not price them high enough to make a huge profit. Remember, you are trying to get rid of the stuff.

  4. Step 4

Advertise. Take out an add in the local newspaper telling people about when and where the yard sale is happening and what types of items people can expect to buy. If you invited friends or family to join you, you can split the cost.

  5. Step 5

The night before the yard sale put up signs on the streets around your house if possible directing people to where the sale is happening.

  6. Step 6

Start your sale early. People who come to buy things at yard sales tend to be early birds. Most of your rush is going to happen before 10 AM so be ready.

  7. Step 7

Set up all of your items for sale and relax. Have some back up plan if it starts to rain and be ready to move the items if that happens.

Tips & Warnings
  • A good way to avoid being rained out is to have a two day yard sale. However, you may want to advertise that there will be different items put out on both days. This encourages people to come the second day.
  • Have it on a weekend if possible. It works out much better with most people's schedules.
