How to Record Streaming Music From the Web
Streaming radio shows and online programs have risen in popularity since their conception in the early 1990s. Online radio offers greater control and convenience for the listener, but only if they are near a computer. Listen on the go by recording your favorite online broadcasts.
Things You'll Need
- 1/8-inch audio cable
- Computer with audio-input support
- Audio recording software

Connect a male 1/8-inch to male 1/8-inch audio cable to the audio-out or headphone jack on your computer. If connected to the headphone jack, no sound will be audible during recording.

Connect the remaining end of the 1/8-inch audio cable to the audio-in or microphone jack on your computer. Audio-in may require a software preamp to make the sound audible.

Turn on the computer and open your sound-recording software. Many computers now ship with audio recording software pre-installed. If yours does not, there are many free, open-source options available such as Audacity and Rosegarden.

Select the input that you plugged the 1/8-inch cable into and press record.

Allow your streaming radio show to play until finished.

Stop the recording by clicking the stop button on your audio-recording software. Export the recording to a usable format, such as .mp3 or .ogg. Load the converted broadcast onto your portable music player to listen on the go.

Tips & Warnings
If the sound is distorted, too loud or too quiet, you may adjust the settings in your recording software to compensate before converting the audio to a playable file.
