How to Design the Best Animal ID Tag
Pet identification (ID) tags are a great way to ensure your pet's safe return should your pet ever become lost. They are recommended for both indoor and outdoor pets, and are most frequently used on dogs and cats. Pet ID tags can be purchased for less than $5 at your local pet store, or can be ordered online from a variety of retailers. Designing your pet ID tag is a simple process, but care should be taken to include all of the necessary information to assist others in contacting you should your pet ever become lost.

1
Select a pet ID tag that is made from durable material such as steel or other metal, and one that will be engraved with your information.
-
2
Ensure that your selected pet ID tag is not too small to contain all of your contact information. Also make sure the tag is not too large to fit on the collar of smaller animals, such as kittens or smaller dog breeds.

If your pet has any special medical conditions, be sure to include them on the ID tag. For example, include "deaf" or "blind" if your pet suffers from these ailments. Abbreviations are acceptable as long as the casual reader can understand them.

Tips & Warnings
Check your pet's ID tag frequently to ensure that the contact information has not rubbed off. Update your pet's ID tag every time your contact information changes. For example, if you change your phone number, make this change to your pet's ID tag. While it is somewhat common for people to put their pet's names on ID tags, this is unnecessary and takes up limited space on ID tags that can only handle 2-3 lines of information.
Never put a minor's name or contact information on a pet ID tag.
