How to Install a Gutter Screen

How to Install a Gutter Screen thumbnail
Add screens to your rain gutters to prevent debris from clogging downspouts.

Installing a gutter screen to existing gutters can eliminate some maintenance to your water drainage system. Screens are used to keep pine needles, twigs and leaves from entering the gutter. This can reduce the need for climbing a ladder and cleaning out the gutters for spring and fall maintenance, although screens may not be completely foolproof. They can be installed on a single weekend using basic hand tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Ladder
  • Roll gutter screen (6 inches wide by 50 feet to 100 feet)
  • Tin snips
  • Screen to gutter clips (matching colors available)

Instructions

    • 1

Place the ladder in a secure position alongside the gutters. If you feel comfortable and the roof slope is not steep, work from the roof. Roll the gutter screen from one end of the gutter to the opposite end. Cut the screen to length with tin snips. Fold the sharp edge, the cut end, of the screen under as the exposed wires can pose a hazard.

    • 2

Fit the upper edge of the screen under the lower edge of the first course of shingles. Typically this is a double layer of shingles. Place the screen between the two layers. The screen should fit under the first course by at least two inches.

    • 3

Place the screen clips anywhere from 18 to 24 inches on center. The clips are manufactured so the edge of the screen will fit under the outside lip of the metal gutter. The clip fits around the edge of the screen and a long tab then goes over the top of the outside edge of the gutter.

    • 4

Begin at one end of the screen and form the long clip over the top edge of the gutter. The tab can be pushed or formed into place with your hand. Keep the screen running in a straight line.

    • 5

Align the mating edges of the screen to the gutter edge as you work your way down the gutter system. The screen that is under the shingles will "float" in place. Overlap all corners of the gutters with a double layer of screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Roofs with overhanging trees may experience leaves covering the screen during autumn. You may still have to climb the roof and remove the leaves for proper gutter operation.

  • Climbing ladders requires physical effort and good balance. If you are uncomfortable performing this task, contractors can be hired to install the screens for you.
