Changing the strings on your guitar can be a tedious job without the right tools. Unwinding and winding the strings manually can take forever, and this uses time that you could spend practicing or doing something else that you enjoy. The Planet Waves Pro String Winder is a great tool for speeding up those gruesome string changes. It's great for winding new strings around the tuning pegs and has a built in string cutter that can be used to cut the old strings off of you guitar and trim new strings after installation.

Loosen the strings on your guitar by turning each tuning peg a couple of rotations in the direction which loosens the string. Use your Planet Waves Pro String Winder to cut the old strings off of your guitar. Remove old strings from the guitar. By cutting the old strings off this way you don't have to unwind them. You can just pull them off after you cut them.

  2. Step 2

Take one of your new strings and attach it to the bridge of your guitar as you normally would. This differs for acoustic and electric guitars. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions on how to attach guitar strings to your specific guitar model.

Place the tip of your string through the hole in the tuning peg on your guitar. Leave enough slack in the string so that it will be able to wrap around the tuning peg three or four times.

Place the end of the Planet Waves Pro String Winder over the tuning key on your guitar. Hold the handle firmly in your hand.

  5. Step 5

Hold the loose string with your free hand while you use the Planet Waves Pro String winder to rotate the guitar tuning key. Using the winder speeds up the process tremendously. Without a string winder it normally takes two or three minutes to wind each string manually. With the Planet Waves Pro String Winder, each string can be wound in about 30 seconds.
