Instructions

  1. How to Make a Light Box for Photos

    • 1

Measure and cut the foam board to the desired size, if necessary. You should have enough to provide the sides, top and bottom.

    • 2
Attach the first side with masking tape.

Attach the left side to the bottom by placing the edges together at a 90⁰ angle. Run masking tape along the outside length of the junction to seal it.

    • 3

Repeat with the right side, attaching it to the bottom to form a U-shaped structure.

    • 4
Four sides, ready to add the back.

Add the top to the structure and secure with masking tape, as well.

    • 5

Turn the box so that one of the open sides is up. Secure the back to the box to close the upper opening.

    • 6

Rotate the box so the remaining open side faces forward.

    • 7
Uae white or colored poster board to provide an uncreased backdrop.

Achieve an unlined, uncreased background by curving poster board from top back to bottom front of the light box. Change colors by changing poster board. Place the object to be photographed inside the box. Position the light source(s) so that the light bounces from the top and sides of the box to illuminate the object without heavy shadows.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a heavy grade of foam board to construct a sturdy light box.

  • Add a frame to protect the foam board light box if you anticipate heavy use or frequent transportation of the box.

  • Build the largest box you can accommodate to get the most use from it over time.

  • Cut notches from the sides if necessary to position the lights.

  • The light box will be useful but not especially sturdy. Purchase a professionally-made light box should you require a higher degree of portability or durability.
